Some questions answered about the Matt Talbot retreat...
( from the pamphlet "weekends lost and found" )
What is a Matt Talbot retreat ?
Interested recovering alcoholics go to a retreat, usually conducted by the clergy (or others) to spend a weekend from Friday afternoon until Sunday afternoon, in conference, meditation, and prayer. There is also an opportunity to discuss problems of a confidential nature with one of the clergy or other retreatants at the house. These matters are discussed in private, and persons of all faiths are welcome. Anything that is said in confidence is kept in the strictest privacy by the clergy or spiritual adviser .
What can the retreat do for the recovering alcoholic ?
It gives us a new start to aid us in our decision to turn our will and lives over to the care of God, as we understand him. The surroundings put us on a spiritual plane, without phones or televisions to disturb us. It helps us to re-establish our faith in which we whom are in the retreat movement choose to call God. It is a check-up point for the right start of a moral inventory. we learn new techniques by the proper use of the power of reason, continue the daily practice of taking stock of what we have accomplished , and what changes need to be made in order to obtain and maintain the serenity of a normal way of life to which all aspire. The retreat program is mapped out by a spiritual expert with years of experience in dealing with spiritual life.
Who is eligible to attend a Matt Talbot retreat ?
recovering alcoholics.
Are Matt Talbot retreat sponsored by A.A. ?
A.A. does not sponsor or endorse the Matt Talbot retreats. This would conflict with A.A's Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. The retreat movement is a by-product of the fellowship. It is a separate and distinct corporation that follows the second tradition of A.A., being autonomous and self supporting. Our Matt Talbot retreat depends on the members for financial support and the furtherance of the retreat. We rely on donations as well, and also volunteers in recovery. Please see the full pamphlet for more details.
